Wanna Vote? Say goodbye to privacy!

19 09 2006

I hate junk mail! To me junk mail is any commercial mail I did not request. I don’t want polls, offers, PSA’s, and don’t even get me started with credit card offers, mortgage companies, and ads.

Today I received a mailer from Discovery Gateway. I’m sure I voted to fund them in 2002, and walked by the other day at the Gateway. It sounds like a great organization, and looked fun, but I still don’t want their mass mailings.

This mailing was especially disturbing because it not only had the address of the place where I rent, but also my PO Box. I don’t give my physical address out to anyone. Eventually I’m going to move and don’t want all my junk coming to my roommate for years to come. I also am very cautious about who gets my PO Box. The whole purpose of the box was to control who gets my info. Foiled again! When the mailer arrived with both addresses in the “To:” field, I was very disturbed.

I called Discovery Gateway and left a message. I was called back almost immediately and given the scary news that the list they used was purchased from the State. Thanks to Jen and DG for being open and helping me sort this out!! Apparently for $1000 you can by the State Voter Information list. Is nothing sacred? This is like when I bought first my house and the first piece of mail I received had the amount of my loan in it. Oh yeah, that information is publicly available too!

Welcome to Utah. Your right to vote is prostituted! I have a call in to get my name removed and to complain. Stay tuned to see if my right to vote will be held hostage by the state government’s greed…

Update 9/26/06: No word back from my friends at the State. I’m in Brazil now and will need to wait until I get back to figure this all out.

Free Culture in Audio!

14 09 2006

Lawrence Lessig, Stanford Law professor and engineer of the Creative Commons has many good things to say. He wrote a great book, “Free Culture”. I wrote about it in a previous post. It was amazing! And now it can be read to you. The book and audio book file are free and unfettered by traditional copyright. So use your copy tool (computer) to make a copy of these. Not only is it legal, but it is encouraged!!

Other great Lessig productions. Free Culture the presentation (different from the book!) & Google Book Search (below) or download this great free speech/culture tool (micro bittorrent client) to download this torrent of the presentation and free yourself of the YouTube window.

Flat Miles

18 05 2006

Holladay to 9th EastErika and I rode this morning for a nice flat noodler. We wanted to get some miles in without taxing the legs too much with the Salt Lake Century coming up on Saturday. She was coming down from up by the Smiths between the mouths of the Cottonwood Canyons, so we met at the Cotton Bottom sometime around 6:30 AM. We rode down 6200 S / Vine and headed south on 9th East. We finally hit some construction and bailed west and looped back to the next north east route to backtrack on 9th etc. Erika rode with me all the way back. We even decided to eat at Blue Plate. Mmmm! Sausage Biscuits and Gravy. 34.5 Miles! Read the rest of this entry »

Grocery List

15 05 2006

Found at Smith's 20060513I saw a post the other day on BoingBoing about an online collection found grocery lists. On Saturday night I was at Smith’s Marketplace. [Note to self: Never go to Smith’s Marketplace on a Saturday night before Mother’s Day!] I saw a scrap of paper in the parking lot and thought it would be nice to pick it up and throw it away. It was an old shopping list. I remembered the post form BoingBoing and decided to keep it and submit it to The Grocery List Collection. Good luck without the Kosher Salt!

South Moutain Punishment

14 05 2006

South Mountain ClimbWe were originally going to start at 7:00 AM, but some wanted to go earlier, so we obliged… sort of. The 6:00 AM meeting at Lindsay’s went ok with only one tardy rider, but we were on the road by 6:30. We were to pick up 3 more en route, and after miscommunication with Mike, a slow down pseudo wreck, and tire gutting, Shawn finally road to get us. We met got out to Rob by somewhere near 7:00 AM so much for an earlier departure.

We road the usual 20th E, Holladay Blvd., Old Mill route then headed south on Wasatch passed La Caille and up over into Hidden Valley. Troy bid us farewell while we continued on Wasatch down into Draper via 17th E and finally rode out 13th E to the base of South Mountain. We took Highland Drive passed Mike Wier Drive. Yes he has a road, but so do MLKjr, Ceaser Chavez, and Rosa Park, and oddly enough, so does Wayne. Read the rest of this entry »
